Von
Dutch, the name that Kenneth Howard gave to himself, is the inspiration behind
the Von Dutch Clothing line. Von Dutch was an artist that many considered
radical. He followed in the footsteps of his father, a well-known artist and
painter in the Southern Los Angeles area. Von Dutch helped to revive the art of
pin-stripping motorcycles and automobiles during the mid fifties, some twenty
years after the automobile industry had declared it as a lost art.
He stripped for about three years, but never
really appreciated the art. Von Dutch believed that he was a mechanic and
aspired to be a gunsmith. His philosophy was that metal would last forever,
while a painting would soon fade away. Despite his lack of appreciation for the
art of stripping, his works were in great demand. People traveled across the
country for his signature artwork.

Von Dutch died in 1982 from complications of the
stomach. He left behind a legacy of artworks and most notably, the symbol known
to many as the flying eyeball. No one really knows the story behind his use of
this symbol. It is believed to be a modification of a symbol that originated
with the Macedonian and Egyptian cultures about 5000 years ago. It’s meaning was
something to the effect of, "the eye in the sky knows all and sees all". Von
Dutch was a believer in reincarnation and the eyeball is thought to have some
relation to reincarnation.
In
1996, Von Dutch’s daughters, Lisa and Lorna Howard, sold rights to the name.
Buyer, Michael Cassel, wanted to use the name to create a business for hot rod
enthusiasts. Cassel later partnered with Tony Sorensen, the company's current
CEO.
In 2000, the first store opened on Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles. It has since
opened stores in Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, Chicago, Miami and Los Vegas. The
most visible of Von Dutch's products is the trucker’s hat. Super stars such as
Carmen Electra, Justin Timberlake, Beyonce Knowles, Jay Z, Paris Hilton, Fred
Durst and Nichole Ritchie wear the signature hat. Even so, the company CEO,
Sorensen, said the company does more sales volume in jeans. Von Dutch carries a
complete line of women’s clothes, men’s clothes, accessories, eyewear and more.
